Tsuta Numa Pond
©AFLO
With a circumference of approximately one kilometer, Tsuta Numa is the largest of the ponds with a waterside path. This pond is a symbol of Tsuta’s forest, with a wooden boardwalk installed by the pondside. The spring-fed pond is home to kokanee salmon and char, and to the left, further in, towers the 1,298m Mt. Akakura. Approximately 300,000 years ago, this mountain crumbled, and thanks to a great wave of debris from the avalanche, Tsuta Numa Pond was born. To the right of the decking lies a modest wetland, where Japanese irises (iris laevigata) bloom in the early summer. On summer nights, under a starry sky, admire the glow of the fireflies (luciola lateralis).
