Zao Onsen district
The opening of the Zao Onsen (hot springs) can be traced back 1,900 years. In terms of its water quality, the Zao Onsen are strongly acidic sulphur springs that are effective in promoting blood circulation as well as encouraging beautiful skin by acting to disinfect the epidermis and strengthen the skin. With their ability to rejuvenate the skin and blood vessels and disinfect and beautify the skin, the onsen are literally “Springs of Beauty.” Furthermore, the onsen district of Zao Onsen features three communal bathhouses, three footbaths and five day-trip onsen facilities, meaning anyone can enjoy Zao’s hot spring waters, not just those staying overnight.
By all means indulge yourself by visiting several onsen and making the most of the baths and their respective characteristics, which include cloudy hot spring water and baths where the water gushes forth beneath your feet, a rare phenomenon even nationwide.
