Tsuta Numa Lake

With a circumference of approximately one kilometer, Tsuta Numa is the largest of the lakes with a waterside path. This lake is a symbol of Tsuta’s forest, with a wooden boardwalk installed by the lakeside. The spring-fed lake, where the tale of Princess Tsuta is said to have taken place, is home to kokanee salmon and char, and to the left, further in, towers the 1,298m Mt. Akakura. Approximately 300,000 years ago, this mountain crumbled, and thanks to a great wave of debris from the avalanche, Tsuta Numa Lake was born. To the right of the decking lies a modest wetland, where Japanese irises (iris laevigata) bloom in the early summer. On summer nights, under a starry sky, admire the glow of the fireflies (luciola lateralis).
