This shrine has over 1,200 years of history as one of the chief shrines of the old Mutsu Province. The main shrine and 14 other buildings, and one of the stone torii gates are designated Important Cultural Property, and the "Shiogama-zakura" cherry trees that bloom in the grounds are a national Natural Monument. The 202 stone steps of the Omotezaka (the frontal approach to the shrine), and the two-story gate when the cherry trees bloom are popular spots for photos. There are approximately 300 cherry trees of 35 different varieties in the Shiogama Shrine grounds, and among them the "Shiogama-zakura," designated Japanese Natural Monuments, are a must-see. The double-flowered cherry trees, members of the Sato-zakura family, whose pistils transform into leaves, are at their best from the end of April to the start of May.
