Osaki Hachimangu Shrine
Date Masamune, a lord from the Sengoku (Warring States) period, ordered the construction of this shrine in 1607. The main hall, which is covered in black lacquer, gold leaf and brilliantly colored carvings, is designated a national treasure. At the Donto-Sai festival, which is held every year on January 14 and is designated an intangible folk culture asset by the city of Sendai, New Year’s pine decorations, protective charms and the like are burned in a bonfire with wishes for sound health and prosperous business in the new year. The “Hadaka Mairi” parade of half-naked visitors to the shrine, also occurring at this time, is famous across Japan.
